Spring & Summer Tips

Nutrition:  Try to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables for snacks during the spring/summer.  During the holidays, limit the quantity of fatty/sweet desserts.  Teach kids to stop at 1 scoop of ice cream, ice pop, and just a little bit of soda, etc.  Drink plenty of water instead of juices and soda.

Physical Fitness:  Continue daily physical activities like family walking, biking when weather permits.  Continue to enroll children in spring/summer baseball, basketball, karate, and swimming to stay physically active.  Avoid strenuous exercise in the hot weather.

Swimming Safety:  The best safety practice is TOTAL supervision for all water activities from bath tubs to outside pools including lakes and the ocean.

Tick Bite:  (NO EFFECTIVE VACCINE IS AVAILABLE TO PREVENT LYME DISEASE IN CHILDREN)  To prevent Lyme disease, avoid tick bites by using insect repellants, protective clothing such as long sleeves and pants in wooded areas.  Check for ticks and/or bites every night.  TO REMOVE A TICK:  With tweezers, position it onto the tick, and pull tick straight up.  If any symptoms of Lyme disease develop like: fever, rash, headache, muscle pain develop; call our office.

Dog Bites:  Never leave your infant and/or young child alone with any dog.  Teach your child basic safety precautions for dealing with dogs.  Instruct your child to stand still if approached, chased by a stray dog.  Tell your child NOT to run, kick or make threatening gestures.  Your child should face the dog and back away slowly until he/she is out of reach.  If your child receives an animal bite that breaks the skin, clean the wound properly (with warm soapy water and apply an antibiotic ointment – Neosporin or Bacterban) and find out if the dog is immunized against rabies, whether the dog was sick and contact our office to see if your child is up-to-date with a Tetanus shot.

Insect Bite:  Wear long sleeves and long pants when you go hiking in the woods.  If get a localized reaction to bug bites, bee stings, mosquitoes bites during this summer; apply ice, Hydrocortisone creams for itching and if it gets infected use Triple Antibiotic cream.  You should contact our office when your child has a generalized allergic reaction with hives, shortness of breath, cough, wheezing, etc.  Use insect repellants such as Off or other similar products to prevent mosquito and tick bites.

Skin Care:  Continue moisturizing your skin daily with a good lotion like Lubriderm or Eucerin.  Before going outside, sunscreen at least 30 minutes prior.  Make sure to re-apply sunscreen.  Avoid prolonged sun exposure; keep kids out of sun between 10 am and 4 pm.

Poison Ivy:  If you are allergic to poison ivy, AVOID contact by all means.  If you do come in contact with poison ivy plants, wash infected area of your body right away and change your clothes.  If you develop streaky red bumps with hives; use Calamine lotion, Benadryl, and Hydrocortisone.  If your child develops a severe generalized rash with severe itching; contact our office.

To Prevent Allergy:  If you suffer from allergies, start taking your allergy medication(s) daily.  Keep windows closed in the house.  Keep children in-doors when cutting grass due to high pollen count.  If you suffer from asthma, you should start taking your preventive asthma and allergy medication(s).

Sunburn: Drink plenty of water during the hot summer days.  Avoid prolonged sun exposure and use sunscreen lotion.  If you get sunburned, stay out of the sun for at least 1 week, apply an Aloe cream.  Watch for infection and DO NOT pop blisters.  Apply cool compresses and take Tylenol for pain.  You may also take Benadryl for persistent itching.

Heat Exhaustion:  If you experience symptoms of heat exhaustion like headache, high temperature, nausea, malaise (fatigue), dizziness; contact our office.  Avoid strenuous exercise during hot weather.  Stay in-doors (air-conditioned room) when it is very hot outside.  Drink plenty of fluids and wear loose clothing.

Travel Safety:  Make sure you have a First Aid Kit and your child’s regular medication with you.  If you plan to travel outside of the U.S., drink bottled water, wash your hands frequently and avoid raw fruits and vegetables that do not require peeling.
