FALL/WINTER TIPS NUTRITION: Try to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables for snacks during the fall/winter. During the holidays, limit the quantity of fatty/sweet desserts. Drink plenty of water instead of juices and soda. PHYSICAL FITTNESS: Continue daily physical activities like family walking, biking when weather permits. Continue to enroll children in fall soccer, winter basketball/karate, and/or in door swimming to stay physically active.
TICK BITE: (NO EFFECTIVE VACCINE IS AVAILABLE TO PREVENT LYME DISEASE IN CHILDREN) To prevent Lyme disease, avoid tick bites by using insect repellants, protective clothing such as long sleeves and pants in wooded areas. Check for ticks and/or bites every night. TO REMOVE A TICK: With tweezers, position it onto the tick, and pull tick straight up. Call our office if the child develops symptoms of Lyme disease such as a bull’s eye rash or joint aches. SKIN CARE: Continue to moisturizing your skin daily with a good lotion like Lubriderm or Eucerin. TO PREVENT ALLERGY: If you suffer from allergy, start taking your allergy medication(s) daily. Keep windows closed in the house. TO PREVENT FROSTBITE: Wear proper winter clothing. Avoid staying out in the cold for long periods of time. TV/VIDEO GAMES/COMPUTER: Continue to limit television viewing to less than 1 hour a day. Instead encourage family games, reading, and/or in-door physical games. SCHOOL: SCHOOL ATTENDANCE: is very important, however, don’t send you child to school with a fever. If uncertain on “HOW TO” treat fall/winter viruses, head lice, or common cold/cough symptoms; contact our office for advice. Non-recorded medical inquiries will not be supported with a school excuse note. LUNCHES: Continue to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. Balancing your meals at school is important even when you are not at home. Keep high calorie snacks off your food tray! BEHAVIOR: Schools are learning environments. Seek help from your teacher(s) if you are having difficulties, do extra homework/reading for practice. And remember, your behavior and attitude is also part of the learning process.
